Teaching Colors With Ashilyn Michelle
Paper Doll Game:
Print a picture of Ashilyn Michelle, the princess mascot for this site, onto cardstock. Trace her dress and make copies of it in a variety of colors, adding tags so they appear to be paper doll dresses. You can trace them onto colored paper if you dislike coloring.
Ashilyn Michelle wears a flowered crown. Make any type of headband or crown you want for her, one to match each outfit. (So the blue dress would have a blue crown in the exact same shade.)
Have your child dress Ashilyn Michelle in a matching dress and crown. If your child is just learning to match, choose either the dress or the crown and ask her to pick out the other item that matches. If she knows her colors, ask her what color dress she wants Ashilyn Michelle to wear. When she tells you, have her pick up that color and then add the matching crown.
Flannel Board Game:
Turn Ashilyn Michelle into a flannel board character. Print her onto card stock and glue some pellon or flannel to her back. Make your own flannel board by gluing (using spray glue) pellon or flannel to a board or stiff cardboard.
Ask your child to draw Ashilyn’s Fairy Godmother—Godmother Chel. Turn the drawing into a flannel board picture as well. Then ask your child to draw some flowers, or print off the flower people on the DLTK website. (pop-up alert)
Again, print them on cardstock and make them into flannel board pictures. Give your child one crayon at a time and one flower at a time. Have her color each flower person only one color. Make at least three of each color. The newer your child is to colors, the fewer you should use. If you’re just getting started, only use two colors.
Tell your child Ashilyn Michelle is having a garden party and is inviting all her flower friends. Godmother Chel will use her magic to gather all the flower friends. Ashilyn Michelle plans to sing for her guests. She wants them to sit in the audience by color. Stick pieces of yarn the same color as the flowers onto the board in circles. Have your child help Godmother Chel fly around, gathering the flowers and placing them in the circle that matches the flower. Talk about the color names as you do this.
If you use the flower people, you may want to make the mini book the people were actually created for, as well.

Princess Ashilyn Michelle suggests putting a hole in
Godmother Chel's hand (this is Sparky's naughty idea.) Then tie a string through the hole. Put a light magnet on the end and glue magnets to all the flower people.
Then Godmother Chel can fly around and "fish" for the flowers.
